Project 1 - Comfy Sofa


When I was younger, I remember my family dreaming of a sofa, where all four of us could fit on

comfortably for movie nights. 


This small dream was awakened one more time, after watching the documentary “Objectified” by Gary Hustwit, specifically during Hella Jongerius’ interview.


Jongerius is a Rotterdam designer whose interest is to give individual character to something

produced industrially. The designer puts a strong emphasis on the feelings and/or attachment that a person may experience when coming in contact with an object. In her interview, she mentions the ways in which an object may become memorable and of high importance, going as far as to state that it becomes a part of the family. Jongerius later goes on to highlight memory and experience created while spending time with a product, provoking thought on the objective outcome of creation. Through her addition of sewn buttons on the sofa, the designer enabled the product to communicate with its user, by adding ‘layers’, which in turn makes an individual feel like they’re buying an object, where the attention has been paid. It was her outlook on design, along with her creation of the sofa with Vitra (which included rather pointless, hand-sewn buttons) that prompted me to create my dream sofa in 3D, using Rhino. 


I began my process by paying close attention to the minimalistic shapes that futuristic design often takes, and emphasizing not the complexity of my idea, but the functionality and usability of it. Amidst my creation process, I imagined a sofa with a ‘pull-out platform’ and detachable pillows, which enable the user extra couch room without the need to sacrifice space in the long run. To give my sofa a comfortable and ‘homey’ feel, I decided to add small square-shaped covers to the cushions, in a way that is not distracting but enhances the visual appeal. The straightforwardness of my creation grants the viewer an obvious focal point on what the object is used for, rather than the designer behind it. In turn, I ended up with a simple design that accompanied by a complimentary colour palette resulted in an aesthetically pleasing visual. 

To complete my project, I added pillows, a rug, a small coffee table, and a lamp using the same colour

palette -  which only added to my desired look.


The overall documentary has proven to be highly educational, as it not only teaches the viewer various object design fundamentals and tactics, but also allows an insight into the professional working process of designers all over the world. With its guidance, I was able to create an object while paying close attention to those tactics, making it realistic and future-forward. It is a fantastic source of education for students like myself, who have no previous experience in the area of object design. I strongly believe that the final outcome of my project would be much different without it.
